JOSHUA - A Brooklyn Tale

Happy 2016!

First, I would like to thank my mother and the ladies of Delray Beach, Florida for recommending Joshua, A Brooklyn Tale. As I read the book over the summer I thought it would be a wonderful consideration for the "Bookworms"!

I also have to thank Robin L. for reminding me about The New City Kosher Deli. There is nothing like a delicious bowl of chicken matzoh ball soup and overstuffed pastrami/corn beef sandwiches to cure all that ails you!!

This story traces the lives of the three main characters Rachel, Paul, and Joshua in Crown Heights, Brooklyn during turbulent times. As their lives become more intertwined we read about deep love, hopeless love, romantic love and about desperation and acceptance. Parental expectations weigh heavily on the decisions of each character.

I am so glad everyone seemed to enjoy this book!

See you on February 8th.

Happy Reading!
Jill

  1. Hi bookworms,
Sorry I missed the meeting!! :-( . I heard it was really good. I am really enjoying the book . I love the way this author writes. It's intriguing and begs me to keep reading. It's been slow because I have to read with my eyes and haven't had too much time, but I am determined to finish.
Look forward to seeing you next month.
Happy New Year! Sorry I missed you hosting Jill. I heard you rocked!
    Be Blessed!

  2. Thanks, Jill, for a great book club meeting. It was nice to have jewish food at the New City Kosher Deli. I had fun seeing my non jewish friends finding new foods that they liked!

I enjoyed the book a lot, and it brought back memories of my youth, as a Brooklyn girl. Looking forward to February!

  3. Jill I loved this book! The writing was great, and the historical facts presented were so interesting. I remember hearing news about the riots, and this helped me understand. I wished more would have happened between Rachel and Joshua, but then it wouldn't have been realistic.
Thank you for your recommendation. Wish I had been there for the discussion.
    Love, Lourdes

  4. I'm a little late on responding, but I wanted to make sure to let everyone know that I really enjoyed this book. I even looked into info on the Crown Height riots in Brooklyn back then. Very interesting to read about the different views on the sign of the times.
I especially liked going to the kosher deli and trying some foods i usually don't eat. Loved it all!!!
    Love you all,
