The Viagra Diaries

This novel proves there’s plenty of life and hot sex after sixty.  Anny Applebaum is a sixty-five year old journalist who not only recognizes her wants, needs and desires....but she goes for them!  She posted her profile on JDate.com after being divorced for so many years.  Most of us thought that would be hard to do, for fear of the crazies we could possibly meet! Anny thought meeting her charming diamond dealer, Marc Rothstein, was a great find.  She quickly learned what a lying, sneaky Viagra using man he really was. Since she still believed in love and monogamy, her heart forgave Marv, AKA- Mr. X, for being so disrespectful.  Her yearning to be in an honest relationship with him, made her appear unrealistic and needy.  By the end of the novel, Anny figures out her feelings and gains the strength to move on without Mr.X.

So many of us could relate to Anny.  We are all strong, beautiful women who want to be respected for who we are, as Anny did.  We discussed how in our society women are not noticed if they aren’t young, thin, and beautiful.  We should love ourselves as we are, but as we shared -- some of us wouldn’t mind a little nip tuck in certain places.  Why not?  If it makes you feel good, go for it!!

All the Best,
Millie

  1. Millie, thanks for making me laugh this month! I liked certain things about this book, but sometimes I felt it was trite. However, I TOTALLY ENJOYED our meeting together at Beny's Trattoria!

Bookworms who missed it -- WE MISSED YOU! It was so thoughtful of Millie to supply us with wine, crackers, and cheese. Even blue candies that look like Viagra!

Hope to see more of you next month at Veggie Heaven, when we are discussing Little Princes, by Conor Grennan. I am really looking forward to another great year of book club meetings. Love, Robin

  2. Hi Book worms,
Fun, fun time!! Thanks Millie for all the goodies! Loved the cheese and blue candies! There were some parts in the book that made me laugh. There were some parts that made me feel frustrated with Annie regarding her slight obsession with Mr. X who was clearly a Viagra popping jerk. Lol. But I really enjoyed realizing that you can love life at any age!!!
    See u at Veggie Heaven!
    Be blessed,
    Mary

  3. Hi All! I found this book quite enjoyable--laugh out loud funny at times! However, in case it wasn't discussed, the women in the book were definitely upper middle class, educated and lovers of art women. It's so hard to find a good companion at this age, but Annie chose at-risk behavior even when the viagra pills were staring at her in the face! The guy was a married man, on viagra, shady dealings (in diamond industry!!!???##%%!!), and an obvious liar. How oblivious to reality can she be? Or was it she was too horny to care and just wanted the sex?
My take is, she should've gone with Ryan, even if she didn't "LOVE" him. You need a loving companion and they had that.
But wait!!! The grandchild coming will provide the human need to love and nurture. But she could've had both with Ryan.
That's my take. Great choice Millie!
Starting to read The Sandcastle Girls for a local bookclub, but I'm afraid this bookclub won't meet my high Neary Book Club standards. Will let you know by email. Miss you ladies, but the video and the messages keep me connected.

  4. Hey there all,
This book made me laugh a few times at the things we do in life that can be unexpected when you have changes in your lives. So glad Annie was a go getter even after 60. i applaud her taking the risk to fond new love and new adventure. Too bad it didn't work out for her, but maybe Mr. Right is still out there. Love you all, Maria R.
