The Last Annversary

The Last Anniversary, by Liane Moriarty, was our topic of discussion. Robin opened the discussion with the question of postpartum depression. Some members of the club had experienced this condition, but not to Grace's extent. Other themes of the story were love, relationships, secrecy, and changes. Mary V. agreed with the character's opinion about love. Is love a decision? "After the honeymoon period, and all that life sends your way, a husband and wife may decide to stay together even though the passion has waned somewhat."
What would you do if someone left you property and you weren't even related to them? I enjoyed reading this book and sharing it with my bookworms!!

Thank you! --
Myrna

  1. This was very entertaining.
Moriarty knows how to develop her characters well--not overly descriptive, but you feel like you get to know their inner beings.
There's Sophie--the unmarried, almost 40-year-old wanting to be a mother; Callum--the seemingly perfect man who nevertheless shows his "manly flaw"; Aunt Connie--protector of her family and businesswoman; Aunt Rose--elderly, arthritic and quietly overseeing everyone; Grace--beautiful and depressed; and Margie--finding herself again after years of husband's verbal abuse.
Moriarty knows how to weave a good story. The kicker was Rose's unexpected revelation at the end!
I feel like going to Australia after reading two Moriarty books!

Thank you Myrna for your choice, your leading, your great wine, the marble cake, and other goodies. Thank you book clubbies. I look forward to another year!
    Love, Lourdes

  2. Hi Myrna and fellow bookworms,
Thank you for hosting this month Myrna, you have been such a wonderful addition to our book club group! Thank you for the sweets. The treat I had was amazing!! I apologize for not finishing the book, because the first 4 chapters I read were really interesting. I felt frustrated that I couldn't share as I normally do. I really enjoy this authors style of writing. I liked that the part of love is a decision, was in the beginning because it is a profound statement. I was able to comment about that part, because I read it. I do look forward to finishing the book. I look forward to our last book club meeting for this year! Wow it did go by so fast!
Be blessed ladies! Happy Mothers Day!!
    Mary

  3. Hi Myrna,

You sure treated us to lots of treats! It was so thoughtful to have marble cake, Rockland bakery goodies, and the Australian wines. I enjoyed our group discussion, and I agree with Mary about the "love is a decision", and in many ways I think it is.

I didn't like the book nearly as much as others. It didn't grab me as far as the plot goes, and I found I did not really truly care about the characters. I want to LOVE my characters, and with this book, I did not.

But still, getting together with book club buddies is always great! Looking forward to our last get together on Anna Quindlen, who is an author whose writing I've loved for a long time.

    XXOO
