The Language of Flowers
Ten of our book club members squeezed enough time to meet tonight at Blu Fig for a discussion of The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. There were many themes in the book, including family, forgiveness, food, second chances, and unconditional love. Victoria had so little faith and belief in herself, in spite of her many talents. The table was decorated with flowers and spices in an effort to communicate love, health, cheerfulness, and more -- to my beloved Neary friends.
It was difficult to agree on the most important theme in the book. For me personally, life can be so fragile, that I felt second chances, along with forgiveness, are the most important part. But then again, if you don't have love in your life, what would it all mean? And for me FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD is always front and center in my life. Then there's maternal love, represented by moss, which is rootless. So perhaps all the themes were very important.
I am so glad Victoria found a true love in Grant, and a second chance with her daughter and Elizabeth. I am a sucker for happy endings -- but this one didn't come easy!

The Four Winds by Kristen Hannah
We met OUTDOORS and in person -- HURRAY - at The Blu Fig in New City to discuss The Four Wind sby Kristin Hannah. Ten of us showed us - yay ...

Hi Ladies,
ReplyDeleteI really couldn't wait till 4pm today. This is such a special time for me. I cherish the times we get together to talk about a book, enjoy a good meal together and laugh. Robin you completely out did yourself. You obviously put soo much thought into your presentation. The flowers, the chocolate , it was all so special. I can't thank you enough for leading this amazing book club .
I enjoyed this book. It was slow for me in the beginning, then it took off like a rocket and I couldn't wait to get in my car to listen. I loved how nature, the beauty of flowers gave meaning and passion to these characters. They all had a deep connection to the effects and language of flowers. I too am so glad it had a happy ending. I left the book realizing how important it is to have people, more important, let people into your life to love and help and support you.
I then say I am blessed to have my Neary book club ladies in my life.
Be Blessed and see you next month.
Mary
Dear All,
ReplyDeleteIt was also great to spend time with all of you! Robin, the flowers added such a nice touch! After this book, I will never see a flower the same way again! I can't wait to learn the meaning of all of the ones in my garden! Although, regardless of the meaning assigned to the by men, I will continue to enjoy their beauty for as many years as they choose to grace my garden with their tintillating colors, textures, shapes and scents!
I apologize that I had not finished reading he book before last night's meeting!! But, guess what? I just did! I loved it! I loved seeing Victoria's resilient and secretly fragile nature work its way through to a more stable and loving place in her life. I'm sure that we can think of one student or two who struck us like she did. My prayer is that we can be the Elizabeth's in their lives! Until next month, may you all be blessed!
