Emma Donoghue's

Never-disappointing, always-satisfying blu Fig was the setting of our April book club gathering. Though the gathering was small (those not in attendance were missed) there was much to discuss about ROOM.

This captivating yet disturbing tale of 5 year old Jack, born into the confines of a 121 square foot square room (11 feet x 11 feet) and his mother, effected us deeply. We discussed Jack and Ma's world or "room" before and after their escape. We explored the author's character development, use of Jack's voice/perspective, and love/attachment themes. As a whole we agreed that ROOM was well written and deserving of praise.

In closing, I want to give a big thanks to my many friends in the book club, near and far, who have always been and continue to be gracious and generous with their friendship and support. Thanks to you all for expanding my literary horizons.  I look forward to our featured May selection, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, chosen by Maria P. I hear it's a great read.

Best,
Nicole

  1. In the beginning I was not happy to be reading this book. I feared it was too dark a story. However, somewhere in the middle when I couldn't put it down, it definitely grew on me. This time, I'm definitely glad I didn't listen, and read with my eyes!

After our discussion, I liked it even more. The power of love and mother child relationships are really something special. Thank you, Nicole, for a terrific discussion and a lovely meeting. XXOO -- Robin

  2. Wow!!!I never would have read this book, but I am so glad I did. Thank you Nicole for selecting a story that was thought provoking, emotional, and captivating, It helped me appreciate my life more especially during these times of uncertainty. We are still blessed in many, many ways. I just hope that I will never know of some one who is ever isolated in such a way.
Loved your "Pick a question" bowl.
    Thanks again Nicole.

  3. Hi Ladies,
Thank you Nicole for hosting. It was a lot of fun as usual.
The book was captivating. Though I think I would have enjoyed reading it better in paper. The little boy saying "room, room" got on my nerve, lol.
I felt exasperated at times feeling for mom and her son. And to know that this happens in real life. I too like Maria pray that anyone I know or we know would never have to experience such a horror!!.
I look forward to next months book. I read it already and it is good!
    Be blessed my friends!
    Mary
